Senior Librarian, Cataloging (Arabic Cataloger) Department: BookOps

Compensation: $68,177 / year
Description Overview The Cataloging department provides discoverability of all materials in all formats to patrons of the BookOps member libraries who search the public online catalog. Materials are discoverable if they are cataloged correctly and accurately with author, title, subject and series access points, in formats utilized by the ILS, thereby making more materials available to more library patrons in both NYPL and BPL circulating collections as well as Research collections.
Under the guidance of a Supervising Librarian, the Senior Librarian performs original and complex copy cataloging of materials in all formats for NYPL's Research Collections. The position's significant focus is cataloging Arabic language materials.
Responsibilities - Performs original and complex copy cataloging of all formats for discovery and access
- Interprets and applies Library of Congress subject headings, Billings classification, RDA, and OCLC standards in cataloging and classifying library materials
- Aids in the maintenance of the catalog database
- Records cataloging statistics as required
- Plans and executes special cataloging assignments and contributes to developing procedures, manuals, and reports.
Required Education, Experience & Skills Required Education & Certifications - ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (MLS, MLIS)
Required Experience - Recent MLS/MLIS graduates are encouraged to apply
Required Skills - Reading knowledge of the Arabic language
- Demonstrated knowledge of MARC21 and ISBD
- Knowledge of RDA and AACR2
- Knowledge of subject analysis and Library of Congress Subject Headings
- Familiarity with Library of Congress Classification and Dewey Decimal Classification
- Familiarity with principles of authority control
- Familiarity with an ILS system (preferably Innovative's Sierra) and a bibliographic utility such as OCLC Connexion.
- Familiarity with emerging trends and issues in cataloging.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient experience using Google Suite or Microsoft Office software.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on projects with a variety of colleagues.

Work Environment Physical Duties - Ability to move book trucks and handle materials that may weigh up to 30 lbs.
