ABOUT LAS AMERICAS IMMIGRANT ADVOCACY CENTER

Las Americas is a nationally recognized organization dedicated to serving immigrants and asylum seekers with high quality legal services, advocacy and support. Las Americas is binational with a geographic footprint of El Paso, TX, southern New Mexico, and Ciudad Jurez, Mexico.

Founded in 1987 by the visionary co-founders of Annunciation House, Las Americas was designed to address the unmet legal needs of Central Americans fleeing civil war and political unrest in the 1980's. Since its founding, Las Americas has served over 50,000 persons, while advocating for a robust asylum system, working to reunify separated families, and advocating for systemic change to US immigration policy and practices.

Today, Las Americas is a leading edge organization rooted in social justice and human rights. We are legal service providers, social workers, communicators, and policy wonks focused on centering the needs of marginalized communities at the intersection of poverty and immigration.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Public Relations intern is a creative, driven, and passionate individual who is a key social media and digital content team member. Under the direction of the Director of Communications, they concept, pitch, and execute social media videos and other assets to drive engagement on Las Americas' social media platforms. This person is flexible, detail-oriented, and can juggle multiple projects simultaneously to keep up with a fast-paced environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the Director of Communications, pitch and execute videos and other content pieces to drive engagement and expand the reach of Las Americas' social media channels, particularly Instagram and TikTok, prioritizing producing educational content in both English and Spanish.
  • Identify relevant and emerging social media trends and execute ideas quickly to tap into opportunities to insert Las Americas into relevant social conversations while staying true to the organization's brand identity.
  • Project manage content creation from end to end, including liaising with internal teams to coordinate content captures and manage any editing or additional asset creation needed.
  • Assist with on-site live social media opportunities, including rallies, community events, and client meetings. Edit and post content in real-time as needed.
  • Create educational, creative content to engage and inform our community about the latest news on immigration policies.
  • Draft social media copy to pair with creative content and assets.
  • Support other members of the marketing and media teams as necessary.
Required Skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Deep familiarity with social media platforms and tools.
  • Must be a team player with a positive attitude and a willingness to take initiative.
  • Previous experience or coursework in public relations or digital communications is preferred.
  • Knowledge of graphic design software (e.g., Canva, Adobe Photoshop) and video-editing skills is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English and Spanish.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 15 hours per week.
  • Availability to work on-site.
  • Strong interest in public relations and a desire to learn and grow in the industry.
COMPENSATION

$15/hr; max of 15 hours a week. Start date Sept 3rd through November 29th.
