BWC is currently operating under a hybrid schedule that may incorporate both teleworking and in-person office hours. Employees must be able to report to the office when requested by management &/or for their initial job training.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Conducting comprehensive consultations supplying advice to organizations about workplace safety regarding regulations and consensus standards (e.g., OSHA, NFPA, OAC, NIOSH, ANSI, ACGIH) and best practices;
  • Evaluating organizations’ safety and health management systems and conducting safety assessments in all types of industries and work environments;
  • Creating technical reports for DSH customers based on consultations identifying findings and actionable recommendations;
  • Creating and delivering occupational safety and health training and webinars;
  • Identifying potential Industrial Hygiene (IH) and/or ergonomic risks and making referrals to IH consultants or ergonomists, as appropriate;
  • Coordinating workplace safety services supporting Division of Safety & Hygiene outreach initiatives such as Safety Grants, Ohio Safety Congress, Library Services, Safety Council programs and special events.

Qualifications

To Qualify, You Must Clearly Demonstrate:

36 mos. trg. or 36 mos. exp. commensurate with program area to be assigned per approved position description on file relative to conducting industrial &/or construction safety surveys, operating related testing equipment & providing technical advice to resolve industrial safety hazards & violations of state & federal regulations; valid driver’s license.


Or completion of undergraduate core program in physical sciences (e.g., physics, chemistry) or engineering; valid driver's license.


Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.



Major Worker Characteristics:
Knowledge of: (1) Customer & personal service; (2) Safety work practices; (3) Safety management systems & accident theory; (4) Laws & regulations pertaining to occupational safety & health (e.g., OSHA standards); (5) Employee development & training; (6) Safety consensus standards, codes, & best practices (e.g., ANSI, NFPA, ASTM); (7) Fire prevention & safety; (8) BWC policies, procedures, & programs*; (9) Basic industrial hygiene; (10) Basic engineering principles; (11) Mathematics including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, probability, & statistics; (12) Electrical principles; (13) Ergonomics; (14) Chemistry; (15) Physics

Skill in: (1) Computer use including MS Word, Excel, & Access, & statistical software; (2) Workplace safety monitoring tools (e.g., direct read atmospheric monitors, colorimetric tubes, electrical circuit testers, stop time measuring devices, wire rope & pulley sheave gauges, calipers, cameras, sound level meters, velometers)

Ability to: (1) Critical thinking; (2) Technical oral expression; (3) Establish & maintain effective working relationships; (4) Technical oral & written comprehension; (5) Technical written expression; (6) Problem sensitivity

Unusual Working Conditions:
Occasional overnight travel may be required; occasional extended work hours including second & third shift; frequent exposure to noise, dirt, temperature extremes, all industrial hazards & occasional toxic substances, caustics, & carcinogens; frequent constrained & prolonged static work postures.

BWC OCSEA Selection Rights:
This position shall be filled in accordance with the provisions of the OCSEA Collective Bargaining Agreement. BWC bargaining unit members have selection rights before non-bargaining unit members. All other applications will only be considered if an internal bargaining unit applicant is not selected for this position.

Salary Information:
Hourly wage is expected to be paid at step 1 of the pay range associated with the position for candidates who are new employees of the state. Current employees of the state will be placed in the appropriate step based on any applicable union contract and/or requirements of the Ohio Revised Code. Movement to the next step of the pay range (a roughly 4% increase) will occur after six months, assuming job performance is acceptable. Thereafter, an employee will advance one step in the pay range every year until the highest step of the pay range is reached. There may also be possible cost of living adjustments (COLA) and longevity supplements begin after five (5) years of state service.

Position may require travel; therefore, persons occupying this position must be able to provide own transportation &/or legally operate a state-owned vehicle.
