Position Summary
The National History Day (NHD) Learning Facilitator is responsible for supporting the implementation and growth of the National History Day program, coordinated by the Wisconsin Historical Society. National History Day is a school year academic program for students in grades 6-12, which focuses on developing research, critical thinking, and analytical skills through history project-based learning.
Utilizing creative engagement methods, the NHD Facilitator leads programming based in historical literacy to create connections between past and present and foster civic participation for students in grades 6-12 for students across the state. The NHD Learning Facilitator works closely with the NHD Coordinator to design and implement each season of the program, which includes developing curricular materials, coordinating participation with teachers, and facilitating regional and state National History Day in Wisconsin contests. They work with other staff members to continually refine and strengthen program offerings. In the near-term future, The NHD Learning Facilitator plays an important role in the Wisconsin Historical Society’s educational mission by delivering programs outside of museum walls that invite students and support them as they become scholars and historians.
Responsibilities - Facilitate virtual workshops about research, civic learning, and historical literacy for classrooms participating in National History Day.
- Revise and update curricular resources to support student research.
- Revise and update facilitation resources for teachers.
- Coordinate and facilitate student research visits to WHS Library and Archives during the fall semester.
- Ensure all resources are accessible for audiences with diverse needs.
- Provide administrative and event coordination support for all NHD regional and state contests coordinated by WHS.
- Attend and help facilitate all NHD regional and state contests coordinated by WHS, including contests in Madison, Milwaukee, Ashland, and Eau Claire.
- Actively communicate information affecting any NHD contest and student experiences with the NHD and Education teams to address all issues in a timely manner.
- Review and modify virtual and printed materials for students and teachers in collaboration with NHD team and teacher advisors.
- Participate in WHS Education team meetings to discuss operations, planning, and program development.
- Other duties as assigned.
Schedule - In the winter and spring, tasks are primarily aligned to the NHD contest season. Hours of work generally occur Monday – Friday, between 9am and 3pm. Occasional work on weekends for regional and states contests will be expected. Travel and participation in the Milwaukee, Mequon, Ashland and Eau Claire regional contests may include an overnight stay.
- In the summer, tasks are primarily aligned to revising and developing preparatory materials for students and teachers. Hours of work occur Monday – Friday, between 9am and 3pm.
- In the fall, tasks are primarily aligned to supporting NHD student research and learning. This may take place in classrooms, virtually, and at the WHS Library and Archives. Hours of work occur Monday – Friday, between 9am and 3pm.
Salary Information
Pay is $16.00 per hour with a weekend differential of 80 cents per hour. This classification is in schedule and class 02-11.
Please note this is a Limited Term Employment position so it does not include paid time off or benefits upon hire.
Job Details
A criminal background check will be conducted by WHS prior to an offer of employment to determine if the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job.
This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and limited to 1,039 hours. This position will be part time and average 20 hours per week.
Wisconsin residency is required for Limited Term Employment positions.
Limited Term Employment (LTE) positions are not civil service classified positions, do not give any rights to permanent civil service classified positions and do not lead to permanent status.
WHS does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.
Certain positions within WHS may allow remote/work from home flexibility for a portion of their work schedule, depending on the needs of the position and the work unit. This topic and any remote work flexibility that may be available will be discussed in more detail in the interview process.
Qualifications - Enthusiasm for teaching and engaging students in the study of history literacy, research, and civic engagement in an informal learning environment.
- Must be available to support the NHD regional and state contests, which take place during the winter and spring seasons.
- Excellent communication and organization skills and ability to effectively engage with large groups.
- Experience working with PK-12 groups and/or developing learning experiences for these audiences preferred.
- Ability to use a computer and possess working knowledge of word processing and database software.
- Ability to meet deadlines and arrive on time.
- Ability to work weekend and evening hours for a limited number of programs and events.
- Ability to drive preferred.
