POSITION SUMMARY:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking an experienced Communications Specialist to support the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) in Bethesda, Maryland. The specialist will play a vital role in enhancing the visibility and impact of health-related behavioral and social science research by developing and implementing effective communication strategies. Key responsibilities include managing community outreach efforts, creating engaging content for various platforms, and simplifying complex scientific information for diverse audiences. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, the ability to innovate in content presentation, and proficiency in communication tools and software. This role demands effective collaboration with community organizations, researchers, and internal teams to promote OBSSR's initiatives and research findings.

TASKS. The contractor shall:

  • Coordinate community outreach efforts, including developing a monthly newsletter and responding to public inquiries.

  • Devise concise and engaging talking points and presentations for conferences and meetings.

  • Stay updated on emerging health communication trends and integrate new strategies into OBSSR's efforts.

  • Establish collaborative relationships with community organizations, including health centers and state medical agencies.

  • Develop and implement communication strategies to promote OBSSR's initiatives and research findings.

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and suggest improvements.

  • Coordinate content development for materials, advertisements, and marketing messages.

  • Create and disseminate research spotlights showcasing significant research advancements.

  • Assist in creating visual materials such as infographics, social media graphics, videos, and presentations.

  • Collaborate with researchers and partners to translate scientific concepts into plain language for various audiences.

REQUIREMENTS. The contractor must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Community and Public Health, Communications, or a related field.

  • A minimum of three (3) years of related experience.

  • Experience in simplifying complex scientific language for general audiences.

  • Familiarity with communication tools and software, including content management systems (e.g., Drupal), social media management platforms, email marketing tools, and graphic design software (e.g., Canva).

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects.

  • Ability to develop innovative ways to present information and engage diverse audiences.

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, for interactions with non-technical and technical staff.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
