The Health and Human Services Department for the City of Portland is comprised of four divisions: Social Services: which includes three shelters, general assistance, and other support services such as homeless prevention and diversion and homeless outreach and engagement. The Barron Center: a long-term care facility. The Office of Elder Affairs: serving Portland residents who are over 60 years of age either living independently or with family caregivers. Public Health: which includes a multitude of public health programs with a mission to improve the health of individuals, families, and the community through disease prevention, health promotion, and access to health care services focused on disadvantaged populations. In total, the Health and Human Services Department has an FY24 operating budget of $56 million with 406 FTEs, made up of full time, part time, and per diem staff.
The City of Portland is actively seeking a qualified and enthusiastic candidate to fill the role of Communications Specialist in Health & Human Services. This position supports the Health and Human Services Department’s ability to communicate about the delivery of our programs and services to Portland residents.
This will be a multi-faceted position geared toward both internal and external recipients with a focus on promoting HHS programs and services, sharing the Department’s value and impact via various media platforms, and supporting internal communications that foster a positive and interconnected work environment. The position is ideal for someone who is passionate about being community focused, understands when and how to use plain language, can decipher complex data-driven information for the general public, and is keen to develop culturally and linguistically appropriate communications tailored to targeted audiences.
