Description


Perform and support a wide variety of repair and maintenance services on the District-owned Revenue Service Transit vehicles. These services include, but are not limited to: rebuild, repair and maintain engines, transmissions, differentials, all gear components and related component parts repair and maintain passenger/operator seating and upholstery complete repairs to the body and structure, prepare, and paint provided welding, metal fabrication and machining services as necessary. Perform similar duties to District-owned Non-Revenue vehicles (NRVs).
Reliable in-person attendance is an essential function of all positions. TriMet is an in-person first organization, with a strong emphasis on in-person collaboration, customer service, and safe and efficient operations. Some positions may be able to work up to two days remotely depending on department policy, business needs, and manager discretion.

Essential Functions


  1. Diagnose equipment system malfunctions (i.e., electrical, air brakes, suspension, heating and cooling systems, transmission, engine, lift, etc.). Identify any defective component or components. Complete all necessary repairs and replace any defective components.
  2. Perform road call service on defective equipment when required. Identify the problem and take appropriate action to return vehicle to revenue service or to the garage.
  3. Perform preventive maintenance inspections as assigned and determine vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests; identifying worn and damaged parts.
  4. Diagnose engine, engine component malfunctions and transmission defects. Identify defective components and complete repairs. Accurately fill-out/complete, and submit to the Assistant Manager, parts issue slips and repair order/time tickets.
  5. Use District equipment, parts, and supplies in a safe and efficient manner. Report any defects as needed.
  6. Perform battery charging and maintenance when required
  7. Repair and replace windshields, windows and mirrors as necessary.
  8. Repair and replace vehicle interior parts and accessories.
  9. Perform frame repairs and rubber flooring installation.
  10. Perform machining operations by using metal turning lathes, drill presses, shapers, power backsaws, grinders, welding equipment and related hand tools.
  11. Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  12. Tag defective parts in support of the maintenance warranty program.

Position Requirements


A minimum of a High School Diploma/ G.E.D. and 18 months of training in Diesel Technology and power systems at an accredited school or training program are required.

Two (2) years of experience working as a heavy duty diesel mechanic within the last five (5) years are required.
Transit agency and/or trucking fleet experience is preferred.
In the absence of formal training as required above, three (3) years of journey-level mechanical work experience in transit, bus, over-the-road coach or medium-duty truck maintenance within the last five (5) years are required.
Upon verification of prior experience, applicant must pass a qualifying written examination and/or hands on test related to the required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (selection criteria) listed below.
Possession of current/valid or ability to obtain Class "A or B" CDL issued by Oregon or Washington with Passenger Endorsement and No Restrictions on Airbrakes; ability to pass a driving record check meeting TriMet driving record standards.

  4. Knowledge of maintenance and repair of transmissions and their components.
  5. Knowledge of welding.
  6. Knowledge of machine practices and procedures.
  7. Knowledge of maintenance and repair of differentials and gear components, including steering gears and flexible coupling transmissions.
  8. Knowledge of vehicle upholstering procedures.
  9. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
  10. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, management, and the general public.
  11. Ability to work weekend, graveyard, swing, or day shifts and attend work on a regular basis.
  12. Ability to successfully complete certification and recertification training as appropriate.
  13. Must pass required physical examination with drug screen, and meet the physical activity requirements of the job, including the ability to safely lift, push, pull, and carry at least 50 pounds (or use appropriate lifting equipment and techniques for heavier items).
  14. Ability to perform all essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  15. Ability to use diagnostic software.
  16. Must meet height and weight restrictions to work safely in confined spaces, utilize equipment, and wear necessary PPE, including fall restraint devices.
Type of Position /Grade/FLSA:

Wage will be in accordance with the current Working and Wage Agreement.

Defined Contribution Plan 401(a)
TriMet provides a defined contribution pension plan to employees. TriMet deposits the equivalent of 9 percent of an employee's base pay into an investment account each pay period. After December 1, 2027, TriMet's contribution will increase to 10 percent of an employee's base pay.

The employee also has the option of contributing up to 15 percent of his/her base pay pre-tax to the account each pay period. The employee directs the investment of the employee's individual account. The employee is vested in the account after three years of service.


Deferred Compensation Plan 457(b)
A Deferred Compensation Plan Section 457 (a plan for public employees), allows the employee to build retirement savings with pre-tax dollars to supplement pension, Social Security and private investment.

M i n i-run operators their spouses/domestic partners, and eligible* dependents are eligible for a photo identification badge, which is honored as a bus/MAX pass on all lines of the District following their 6 (six) month probationary period.


*Child dependents are eligible for a free transit pass up to age 19, or age 24 if living at home and attending school full-time.

T EI Membership
TriMet's corporate fitness center (TEI) is available to employees, and their spouse or eligible domestic partner, at five locations. Membership dues are only $13.00 per month for TriMet employees and an additional $6.00 per month for a spouse or eligible domestic partner.


Please note: Full Time (FT) & Mini Run Operator (MRO) employees receive a security ID badge and are eligible to join TEI immediately upon hire. The spouse or domestic partner, however, does not receive a spouse ID badge until after the employee has successfully completed their probationary period. At the end of the probationary period, TriMet spouse identification badges will be issued to the employee's spouse or eligible domestic partner at the employee's request. Once the spouse/domestic partner receives their ID badge, they will be able to join TEI.
