Job Description

The Assistant Extended Day Teacher is a part time, 10-month, on-site position that reports to the Manager of Auxiliary Programs for the 2025-2026 school year.

The Waynflete Extended Day Program reflects Waynflete’s mission—to engage the intellect of our students, to guide them toward self-governance, and to encourage their responsible and caring participation in the world. To that end, the Extended Day Program addresses students’ needs at the end of the school day with a variety of activities which include arts and crafts, sports, hands-on science exploration, team building challenges, outdoor play and exploration, walking field trips, STEAM, cooking projects, multi-generational lessons, and giving back to the greater Portland community. From homework help to fun physical activities, the program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn, grow, and socialize in a relaxed setting.

Location : Waynflete School Campus (360 Spring St. Portland, ME, 04102)

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

• Supervise age groups: EC, K-1, 2-3, 4-5

• Be in person for all days and hours noted below.

• Work at least one First Out (5:30pm) per week 

• Assist with activities such as: games, songs, program projects and more.

• Interact with students, colleagues and the Leadership Team from a place of enthusiasm, curiosity and professionalism.

• Keep the safety of students in mind at all times. 

• Diligently track attendance including student workshop transitions

• Complete prep and end of day clean up responsibilities.

• Communicate incidents in a timely manner to the Auxiliary Programs Manager.

• Provide information to Auxiliary Programs Assistant for monthly Extended Day Newsletters

• Participate in all of the Full Fun Days noted below and additional days if available.

  • 10/24/25, 8:00am - 3:15pm

  • 3/30/26, 8:00am - 3:15pm

  • 5/1/26, 12:10pm - 3:15pm

  • 5/15/26, 8:00am - 3:15pm

• Complete DHHS requirements: fingerprinting approval, MRTQ registration, MMR and Tdap vaccination records, online safety training, professional development hours, etc.

Program hours :

• Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3:10-6:00pm 

• Wednesdays from 12:10-6:00pm 

Most Extended Day teachers leave at 5:00pm. Three teachers stay from 5:00-6:00pm - with the first teacher leaving at 5:15pm, the second leaving at 5:30pm, and the third leaving after the last student departs at 6:00pm.

Assistant Extended Day Teacher Schedule and Hours : 15.5 hours per pay period with the possibility of additional hours if providing care from 5:00-6:00pm.

• November 25- Normal school day, NO Extended Day 

• November 26-30- Thanksgiving Break, No School or Extended Day

• December 20-January 4- Winter Break, No School or Extended Day

• January 16- EC and K-1 Full Fun Day 

• January 19- MLK Day - No School or Extended Day

• February 14-22- February Break - No School or Extended Day

• March 30- Full Fun Day

• April 18-26- April Break - No School or Extended Day

• May 1- Grand Parent and Friends Day - Full Fun Afternoon

• May 15- Full Fun Day

• May 26- Memorial Day, No School or Extended Day

• June 10- Last Day of School and Extended Day

Program Expectations :

• The Extended Day Program addresses students’ needs at the end of the school day with an inclusive, supportive community, engaging outdoor activities, free choice, socializing, and academic support through the guidance of a nurturing staff.

• Assistant Teachers implement a weekly schedule balancing outdoor free play with organized games and craft choices as designed by the Lead Extended Day Teacher.

Compensation : $19 - $20 / hour based on experience.

Qualifications :

• 1+ years of experience working with children in an educational setting. 

• CPR/First Aid/AED certified preferred.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

• Dedicated to working collaboratively with a diverse team of talented teachers

• Passion for working with children and creating meaningful experiences.
